Stone Throwers

Shimei was a guy who followed King David around criticizing, persecuting and literally throwing stones at him and his men. He held a grudge against David, holding him responsible for the downfall of Saul. He laughs at David when Absalom, David’s son blindsided David and stole the kingdom. Then once David regained the throne Shimei bows before David and begs for his life. David’s men wanted to kill him, but David forgave.

“Therefore the king said to Shimei, “You shall not die.” And the king swore to him.” II Samuel 19:23

We all have Shimei’s in our lives. Those who love to see us fail, those who hate on us and throw stones of hate at us every chance they get. How we respond to those people is important, not just for us, but for those who are watching our faith and leadership. Jesus was clear in teaching us the correct way to respond, He said.

“Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you.” Luke 6:27,28

In Romans we read that we are not to be vengeful and so frustrated those people. This takes disciple that is beyond us. Only through God’s help are we able to have the strength to hold back from throwing stone for stone. I know I must work at controlling my tongue from criticizing such people, yet I’m supposed to love, pray and bless them? That doesn’t make sense, yet that’s the plan of God. The longer I live the more I understand that forgiveness and mercy for others makes me more like Christ than any other time and is for my benefit. My prayer is that God helps me to let go and love regardless of how unlovable people are. For we are all unlovable at times.

Stay Strong!
